The Perigord is one of the home places of Cro-Magnon Man and has many wonderful prehistoric sites (the most famous being Lascaux). The landscape has been largely untouched by the industrial revolution and there are still many unspoiled villages with beautiful stone houses.
We have invested in a “maison de maître” built in 1843 by a retired military officier with his bonus money from participating in the french colonial campaign in Algeria which is now in phase 2 of renovation. We aim to keep the old feel and touch of the house with the best in modern facilities
There are many reasons that have enticed us to invest in Dordogne.
Technological and infrastructures: The Conseil General or local authorities decided a few years ago to roll out a plan for the department with high speed or DSL connections. Over 80% of the population is now covered This is coupled with being on the interchange between the north/south and east/west motor ways that cover France that is 10 minutes drive away on secondary roads. Toulouse and Bordeaux are within easy reach where there are good connections either by high speed train (TGV or train à haute vitesse) that now cover europe. These two towns have many international air destinations with most major operators. Nearby there is the low-cost airport at Begèrac and soon to be one at Brive-la-Gaillard which will also capture many thousands of tourists every year.
Culture: The Dordogne region is famous worldwide for its stone-age relics. It has the largest museum in France dedicated to this mythicam part of our history. It is also the area of France where there are the most historical buildings (castles etc.) to visit outside of Paris. Sarlat la Canada is a Michelin 3 star visit with its medieval houses and alleyways. Nearby is the very famous Rocamourdour village perched on a cliff side.
Gastronomy: Perhaps the Perigord is best known for its “black gold” - the world famous truffle that gives an indescribable taste to even the most simple dishes as well as foie gras.
Sports:
This area is renowned for canoeing and kayaking in its many rivers, the most popular being the Dordogne and the Vezière. There is nothing more convivial than taking the time to slowly meander with the current by the most spectacular natural and man made sites. It is still possible in the middle of the tourist season to find spots that transport you back 200 years.
